Work Ethic

DH and I both have very strong work ethics. We are trying to instill that in our children too - as we believe it to be a good value to have. Our oldest Braeden, has been to put it bluntly - a sloth. Telling him to hurry results in slow motion. Asking him to do something results in - In a minute. In our attempt to get him to be a bit more responsible - we made him get a job.

A bit of backstory here - we gave him a car for his 16th birthday in October of 2006. For his good grades - he earned gas $$ and insurance for a few months. When summer rolled around - he babysat the younger two while I worked in order to pay his gas and insurance. DH decided that Braeden HAD to get a job - I wasn't so much for it - as I wanted him to focus on his studies when school resumed. DH put his foot down, and so began the exhausting task of motivating Braeden to get applications put in. We treated him like he was on unemployment - he had to put in 3 applications a week - and then we wouldn't bug him - LOL. After the 2nd week - he got hired by KFC/Taco Bell. We have been pleasantly surprised by how motivated Braeden has become with his job. He gets up on time - works hard - has gotten a couple of raises - and gets great reviews from his boss. In addition - he is carrying a heavy course load at school - and still getting good grades - and he's playing parks & rec basketball. He is one busy boy - motivated and with a great work ethic. I guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree and I can no longer call him a sloth LOL.

Here's a layout I did to document his first day of his first job!

Braeden's 1st job at age 16, is teaching him the value of hard work & money. It was a struggle to get him to apply for jobs. But now, we have a hard time getting him to take time off.
